About the Me
I was born in 1992 in a small town in northern Illinois, and in 2011 moved to an even smaller town in Colorado, to pursue my two passions: art and horses.
I'm currently attending Western State College and studying to be an illustrator, though I have every intention of being a professional horse trainer and/or starting a rescue of my own, concentrating in mustangs and/or problem horses...and this can mean both horses who have been dealt problems or horses that like to give their humans problems.
As of 2011, I have been riding for 14 years and training for about 5. I don't come from a "horsey family"...in fact I'm the first person in my...erm..bloodlines...to ride or even be remotely interested in horses. And I got it bad. I'm a full blown addict! I have had my fair share of bad horse experiences, and also a few good ones, but they never seemed to last.
I actually did own a horse before Rain, a half-arab gelding (named Spirit...) who my parents got for me when I was ten, and he was six months old, with the idea that we could grow up together. Through the years we grew and bonded, but as he got older we started having people tell us that he and I weren't a good match. We were both too young, and that ended up proving to be true. We had him professionally trained as a three year old and I tried to take over from there, but I just didn't have enough experience with green horses to make a difference in his, also very proud, personality. We ended up having to sell him, though to a good friend, who he still lives with now.
Fast foreword to 2009, and I was leasing/training a half-arab mare, now fully experienced with green and kind of insane horses. She was kept in a pasture of abandoned horses who's owners either just stopped coming, moved, or left for another reason. In that pasture I fell in love with a saddlebred gelding (whom I called Navi), who had never been halter broke, never really been touched, but was very curious about the girl who always came in the pasture to give him special attention. I began to make him my side project, until I realized that I would never have him ready to be brought to Colorado by the time I was leaving...so regrettably he stayed in the pasture, surely getting wilder by the day, as he did when I skipped a day or two between visits.
...It should be pretty easy to see what originally attracted me to Rain after having a bit of my personal history. She's the perfect combination of the two horses who have made the greatest impact on my life, plus she's a mustang, which I have always dreamed about working with. When I met Rain she immediately reminded me of both the geldings at once, for different reasons: her pride, size and build were very similar to Spirit, and her bottomless gaze of curiosity created the unbeatable draw the Navi had. Plus, she's a complete start-from-scratch, which satisfied my need to prove myself after losing Spirit, and also to give me the rush of working and bonding with a wild horse again, as I did with Navi.
But as I got to know her personally more, though I still saw those two in her, I also realized that she wasn't Spirit or Navi, she was Rain. My Rain. She was the perfect combination of everything I was looking for in a horse, and I was exactly the kind of patience that she needed. I can't say that I have any sure-fire plan for where we'll be going with training, but I can't help but look very foreword to our future together!
